it's like a cellphone one-drin.. "i'm there"
Until everyone decises to use them. It'll be like car alarms...they were good for the the first adopters but once everyone got them nobody cares anymore.

Heh, a growl feature would be nice... An AppleScript trigger which sends dozens of nudges back would be cool as well :P

Seriously, people irritate me enough while I'm typing by saying "Are you there", "Did I say something wrong", "You're just ignoring me" etc as it is. I don't want to see my window bounce and vibrate just because the ass on the other end hasn't learnt the virtue of patience.

Considering further, a text notification within the message window "X has nudged you" and a growl notification would be okay, but still it's a useless feature to begin with and it irks me that we should have to work out how to deal with it.

how about, once Adium has blocking capability, a system where anyone who sends you nudges gets blocked indefinitely?

I actually like the system that exists right now, watching my msn contacts getting frustrated trying to send me nudges :)

A nod's as good as a wink to a blind bat, if you know what I mean.

As opposed to all those far-sighted bats flying around grabbing mosquitoes at 30 yards :D *ping*

If they're going to be anywhere, they should be behind the text, not in front of it. And that'd be difficult to do with the WebKit view, probably.
Nudges cause the window of the person you send them to to shake for a couple of seconds, to get their attention.
That's insane, as are many of the new features in MSN 7. (Which is why I wrote this satirical piece for BBSpot.) Though it might be cool to try a non-annoying CoreImage effect on the window, maybe something like a poke animation where part of the window gets depressed, like a pillow being poked by a finger or something.

Hahah, wow, I read that shortly after it was published and found it hysterical. Didn't make the connection to it being you who wrote it. :)

Maybe all the features of MSN 7 can be incorporated into Adium? This will please everyone. Features such as winks which some may find annoying, some may find useful. If you don't want to use it then the option for it to be disabled could be made available.

Implementing a feature doesn't just involve agreeing that it should be implemented. It takes a lot of time to plan, implement, and test everything that goes into Adium, and in many cases this time could be better spent on other features, fixes or improvements.

If there is already an ObjC wrapper around the gaim code for nudges (does gaim even support nudges?) then i'll be happy to add support for it in my "Window Effects" plugin...

I know Gaim 2.0.0 will support Yahoo buzzes (in the display-text sort of way discussed previously), and Gaim 1.x does not. I'm not sure about nudges, though... I don't think there is any support at present.

Then why the hell are people arguing here if it's not even possible?!

While we [devs] work to make users happy, that's not the driving force ... it's personal enjoyment in coding, personal goals, and in the end, what you know or want to learn.

Simple group mentality "I want, gimme gimme" doesn't mean devs should be, in essence, coerced into doing something simply because of external pressure.

Also to be noted - even if everyone who used Adium agreed that aMSN/Proteus/iChat/MSN/Client Bob did something right, that doesn't mean Adium needs to go out and include a carbon copy or improved version.

Adium is NOT a free recreation of your favorite [commercial] client, it's a labor of love by lots of dedicated folks. Take it as such :)

What about the ability to display the new status messages of MSN 7?

A text notification would be fine with an option to add a Growl notification if the user wants to.
It's not a bug. It's an undocumented feature.
