Re: Nicknames
Well... I can't really parse that very well, but I'll answer what I think you're asking. You can use nicknames and emoticons in Adium. In fact, it'll automatically pull your nickname from Address Book if you have your screenname there.MacCuajo wrote:since i use adium .. i cant use my own nickname .. so would be cool to do that (like normal messenger) put emoticons and those things
Are you referring to the MSN nickname? Go to Adium > Preferences > Accounts pane and set the Alias for your MSN account. That's the nickname. And if you need the full MSN emoticon set go to http://www.adiumxtras.com/index.php?a=xtras&xtra_id=1
(I'm assuming you're on MSN because you mentioned the 'normal messenger')

Check the emoticon preferences: Adium menu -> Preferences -> Emoticons. There are a few packs there, and they must be enabled (have a check in the checkbox) before the emoticons can be used. What emoticons have you been trying to use?
As for MSN aliases, to see someone's display name in the message window, go to the Preferences, Accounts, click your MSN account, go to the Advanced tab, and make sure the top checkbox is NOT checked.

seeing MSN display names as names in contact list
My friends on MSN and I change our display names constantly, but I find that in using Adium, the names don't show up on my contact list. I have to hover my mouse over their entry in my contact list to see what their current display name is, then I have to open the info box of that particular contact, and change their alias under the 'settings' tab by manually entering their new display name. If I leave the alias field blank, then only the contact's e-mail address shows in my contact list. Is there any way to make their current display name show up in my contact list? According to what dchoby98 said in the last post, the top checkbox in the 'advanced' tab of account preferences should not be checked. And, I don't have it checked, so I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong here... Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Figured it out...
...Actually, I just now figured it out. I was looking through the 'preferences' window, and I looked under the 'advanced' tab at the 'address book' prefs, and I noticed that it was set to import contact names from the address book. I unchecked that, and now the display name is showing in my contact list. yey
javascript:emoticon(':P')
(Just FYI, I've never had the 'treat contacts' names as extended status' box checked, and I also have always had the contact name format set to 'alias'.)
