file transfer ports

yes, yet another file transfer topic

anyway, i have read that page about opening ports and several topics about file transfering, but i still have a few problems.

1) i know i need ports 5190-5200 open, but how can i do that, if my router doesn't offer that many ports to be opened? i've read some place that you can actually open a range of ports, without having to input each one individually, but i can't find out where to do that.

2) once i figure out how to open the ports, is it possible to open them for multiple computers, that are behind the router? i've been told it isn't, but i thought i might ask anyway.

i have ports open but adium is still hit and miss as far as sometimes i can recieve files, sometimes i cant. and i can never seem to direct connect

1) You'd need to read your router manual... varies by model.
2) Not generally.

File transfer in 0.8x over AIM sucks in many ways. This will be improved soon we hope

i read my router manual cover to cover and didn't see anything saying about opening a range of ports, so i just turned osx firewall on, opened the ports there and then DMZ everything to my iMac. though, even after doing that, i can't get file transfer to even start in aim. is that what you meant, by it sucking? because it doesn't seem to work at all.

Don't think "how to open ports" will be in the manual. You'll have to look around to find where. I go to http://192.168.1.1 and there I get a login screen for my modem/hub/router/whatever. Once logged in I go to advanced prefs (or something simliar) n' open the ports from there.

i know. i did that and read the manual, just to see if it said anything. my router offers only 10 ports to forward, but adium alone, needs 11, plus i have other apps that need ports opened. the only way, i can see to do it, is to DMZ my machine and open ranges of ports in the osx firewall.

i did try file transfering, without my firewall on (which means all ports are open, right?), but still had no luck.
