That was added, IIRC, to fix issues with long URLs in messages. Could it be applied in the style on a per-message basis [rather than to the full contents which includes the name] to maintain that fix?
It could, but each message style would have to implement it separately.
In Eclipse (also Fiat) we used "overflow:hidden" to keep long lines from making the window scroll horizontally. (I tend to prefer the "word-wrap:break-word" method, because with overflow:hidden, long lines just get cut off, but I didn't know about word-wrap until yesterday.) The kicker is that word-wrap:break-word overrides overflow:hidden, so my personal preference is just to leave it to each individual theme to keep its lines wrapping correctly (as was the case pre-.80). Put a little note in that tutorial, and once all the built-in themes get the fix, it shouldn't be long before the others catch up, if they haven't already.
I'd rather leave it in as default behavior, which seems to work for most styles, since there's an easy way for styles such as Eclipse which end up eliciting problems to override it and do their own thing.
Does this mean a fixed version of Urbn and Eclipse will be released soon?
Eclipse, at least
I'd like to release 0.87 by the end of the weekend; could you please email me or post to Trac the updated version when you have a chance?
Quick OT question: Has the Smoke variation of Eclipse been discontinued? I much prefer the way Eclipse looks over Urbn, but the disappearance of Smoke has made me use Urbn anyway
Edit: It seems that the pre-packaged Eclipse does not have Smoke, and the only way to get it currently is to replace the one in Adium's package contents with the one downloaded from xtras. Will Smoke be included in the pre-packaged version of Eclipse in the next release of Adium?

Yep. For copyright and filesize reasons, they couldn't include the default background pictures that went along with the Smoke/Frost variants. I've re-added those variants, but left out the backdrops, so that shouldn't be a problem anymore.
