Doesn't look like much else at present; here's the Gaim ChangeLog so far. If the guy writing the MSNv11 patch finishes it, I think it would open the door to support for the other recent MSN advances (like the Personal Message thing), but I have no idea what the status of that is.
User base:
AIM: No figure for active users, but 195 million total registered user IDs (January 2003)
Gadu-Gadu: 3.6 million total (January 2005)
ICQ: 6 million active, 140 million total (June 2003)
Jabber: 4 million total. (October 2003)
MSN: 100 million active, 155 million total (April 2005)
Yahoo Messenger: 79 million active users. (May 2005)
The only one I wouldn't expect to be representative percentage-wise is Gadu-Gadu; I think Mac is underrepresented in Poland, though I don't have data to back that claim.

Therefore, there are the most AIM/ICQ users. They merged, so you can talk ICQ -> AIM and AIM -> ICQ. So, you can’t just say AIM, otherwise you’re neglecting all the ICQ users in there.
Now use Jabber exclusively. I like that it's open source. I like the lack of advertising and I like the flexibility. I think it has tons of potential in education.
Chalkface makes free and paid-for educational resources including worksheets and lesson plans. We are a global virtual corporation l glued together with Jabber.

Education? Why? All the students will just use AIM, Yahoo, or MSN because Jabber works with them anyway
I pretty much only use MSN cause that seems to be what everyone else I want to talk to uses. I have a Jabber account, but it's more of a political statement (go Open Source) than anything else.
It's a bit of a sad fact that MSN is mostly so popular because it's being driven by MS. Although it is becoming a fairly feature rich system, even if the official client does like to shove advertising down your throat.

Because a school administrator can setup a jabber server and block all external chat servers.

Hehe, maybe... Someone should get a petition going and send it to their schol
A bunch of schools do exactly that (have an internal Jabber server). Duke's going to be recommending Adium as the Mac client for their Jabber network this coming year

Cool! I didn't know that and that's where I'll be going
