This feels like I'm asking what should be a simple question, but neither I nor my friend have been able to figure this out.
I'm trying to configure Adium such that when an initial message comes in (i.e. no tab/window exists for that chat yet) the only thing Adium does is bounce the dock icon. The closest I've been able to come is setting "Hide chat windows while in background", which kind of works, except it's still opening windows for initial messages -- I just can't see them until I foreground Adium.
I've set in Preferences -> Events to have only one event associated with "Message Received (Initial)" and "Message Received (Background chat)" each, bounce dock icon, and yet still it pops open a new message. Even worse, it has the annoying habit of un-minimizing a minimized chat window if a new tab opens up in that window, I'm assuming these two behaviors are linked (as they both happen when a new chat starts that doesn't yet have a tab or window associated with it).
Any advice?
Only bounce dock icon on message received?
Oh man, I too would like to know how to do this. I've been messing with Growl recently hoping it might somehow make a difference. But unfortunately no matter what I do, it automatically creates a window when an initial message is recieved. I really hate it. I'm guessing it's just a bug. Hopefully someone has a fix for it though.

I don't think this is a bug, I think that what you're asking for simply isn't available right now. I would file a request ticket on trac after searching to see if the ticket already exists.
Yeah, it definitely appears that this is a functionality thing, not a configuration thing. But that's amazing to me! Every other IM client I've used on every platform, OSX included, offers this functionality. I'm more puzzled than anything else that Adium hasn't, I'd think that'd be something folks would be clamoring for.
Friends I've asked about it say they work around it by always keeping an IM window open to some random buddy, so other tabs open 'behind' the already-opened one. Halfway decent workaround, I suppose, but it'd be nice if 'open a window' or 'open a new tab' were action options for 'message received' and 'message received (initial)'.
