Go away iChat!!

Post by AlexHVD »

Hello,

Adium, in general, is nice, but there's a really annoying thing it does that's keeping me away from it. Every time I get a new instant message sent to me (this is AIM by the way), iChat opens itself and displays the message there as well. So, yes, you can imagine why this would get incredibly aggravating...

If it helps, I'm running OS 10.3.5.

Thanks for all your support.
-Alex.

iChat has a program that runs in the background and this is why it occurs, not actually because of Adium. It's related to their menu bar item because it runs a background version that launches iChat. Easy to stop - open Applications -> Utilities -> Activity Monitor and filter for iChat and kill 'em all :)

Or just go to the iChat preferences somewhere and select "Go offline when quitting" or something like that.

Correct. IIRC the agent/helper will still hang around until at least logout so the killing is still necessary :)

I beg to differ. The iChatAgent only does stuff you tell it to do, and if you don't tell it to stay online after iChat quits, there will be no messages.

But it's good to be on the safe side!

It can be running, but may not necessarily be connected.

Hi all,

I'm actually having the opposite problem--I want to enable iChat's background feature but can't.

A while ago I installed Adium X and was having problems with iChat answering incoming messages instead of Adium, even when iChat was closed. I did something to disable this--I think it had to do with iChatAgent, or maybe I simply checked the "Set my status to offline when I quit iChat" option. (Maybe this was a couple of years ago when iChat didn't have this option?)

But now I want to go back to using iChat, and I want to uncheck that option. The thing is, the option is grayed/disabled, so I can't uncheck it. Can someone help me out? I tried deleting com.apple.iChat.plist.
