Quick Search of Contacts

Post by csvke »

I wonder if there's something like this?
In PC with Miranda IM, there's a plugin allowing user to fire up a window searching user in the contact list, I can find users within a few keystroke..

a) File->New Chat
or
b) Just type in the contact list.
The duck still burns.

the only downside to those options is that you have to type/search for the beginning of the contact's name, not any part.

if you have a dire need for searching internally for contact names, i'd suggest using a utility such as launchbar or quicksilver, both of which integrate nicely with adium.

Maybe an iTunes-like search bar would be a perfect solution.....

Where would it go? That would take up way too much space in the contact list, and would also only be available to those that have a windowed contact list.

If the person is in your contact list, there's a >90% chance you've typed with them before, so just search for the chat log.

Would you mind expanding on that? A search bar in the contact list window would probably be 50 - 100% the width of most contact lists.

Edit: Or, were you saying "no it wouldn't" to the parent quote? If so, then ignore the previous paragraph :oops:

Search boxes expand and contract with the size of the window if I remember right. Try adding a ton of white space to say the mail.app toolbar until the search box is the width of your contact list.

Ahh, I see. I was imagining the searchbar as being part of the toolbar at the top with all the other icons. If this were so, then the searchbar would probably be unusably short because of the other icons. It does look all right on the bottom, though. Still, the problem of it only being available to those who have regular window contact lists exists. Of course, this is keeping in mind that the searchbar is still purely hypothetical.

People using the nonstandard contact lists should know how to use the cmd+n window as well.

I was imagining something like Firefox's find-as-you-type bar
