I hate it. I really do. It ruins the entire purpose of having an online chat. It's illogical and only aggravates others.
Even worse are the people who say "well I go invis cause otherwise I'll get a lot of IMs." I hate em. If you don't want IMs, tell them that. We are all people and all people have some compassion. I've had several instances where all I needed to do was politely ask the spamming friend to lay off a bit. If it doesn't work, you can block. I have nothing against blocking because there are times when the offender is heartless, but you should not make everybody suffer by enabling invis mode.
But the sad truth is that people like their invis mode. They feel secure and empowered so our only option is to work around that. It would be easiest to make a checkable option in the preferences: "respect invisible mode" if invis mode is detectable.
If that is not possible, you might consider a timing script. 99% of invis mode users I know enable it directly after they log in. Just a simple timer will easily spot these people, and we can color them something different in the buddy list.
You can also put in a timed IMer. Send a periodic message that sends a customizable message to all "logged out" users. Perhaps there is some other way to confirm if they are active or not like requesting and canceling a file transfer.
I really wish I was profficient enough to do something like this myself, but I'm not.
ty for droning through my rant, but I hope something gets done.
Concerning Invis
invis = invisible !?!
why does it ruin "the purpose of having an online chat"?
I'm one of those persons that uses the invisible state pretty often.
I don't want people to bother me while I'm working, but have the possibility to bother people when I feel like.
If you would be able to know when someone is there who's lurking, it would ruin the idea of being invisible. When I don't want to be seen, I don't want you to see me. it's as easy as that...
It never aggravated me others do that to me, and it does seem very logical to me.

i personaly will still message if someones status is away, they could have forgotten to change it back or something like that, almost every time i message an away person they respond back imediatly. what i avoid is someone that is idle, cause most of my friends have no clue how to fake there idle.
and maybe someone went to invisble cause they want to talk to someone and no one else and will take off invisible when that person shows up?

It seems pretty simple to me - the ability to be invisible is available in some IM protocols, and Adium supports it in those protocols. If you don't like invisibility, then don't use it. In my view, complaining about it is no different than complaining about someone else's dock icon - if you don't like it, then use a different one

Now that I think about it, I should not be asking you guys to make a change like this in Adium. Adium is working properly when something like invis mode is working and it would not be a proper AIM client if what I want is implimented.
So then my question changes: Can you pass the name of a contact and his/her message to a script when an event is called? If so, how? If not, can you please put that feature into future versions?
It would also be nice if you can show me how to call the python interpreter from actionscript (or even better - call it from adium) just because I am much more fluent with python.
