Request: emoticons displayed

Post by suicidalmoose »

Programs like adium utilize growl really well, but i was wondering whether it would be possible to have emoticons displayed on growl messages. ie: if you're familiar with msn6/7 on M$ Windows, then you'll notice that when a contact comes online and he/she has an emoticon in his name, the emoticon is actually displayed on the sign in message (ie its displayed as :D Person :D rather than being displayed as :DPerson:D). Is it possible, or too difficult. Same goes with notificiations of new messages.

IIRC, we don't allow images inside the notification description/title -

Code: Select all

+ (void) notifyWithTitle:(NSString *)title
			 description:(NSString *)description
		notificationName:(NSString *)notifName
				iconData:(NSData *)iconData
				priority:(signed int)priority
				isSticky:(BOOL)isSticky
			clickContext:(id)clickContext;
notifyWithTitle:(NSString *)title
description:(NSString *)description

and therefor, no emoticons can be displayed in a growl notification.
If i'm right, you should probably fill a ticket about it.

sorry bout not being able to post a screenshot, I just sold my PC and only have a Powerbook G4 available to me (cute little 12" with 1.2 gigs of ram!). Is it worth filing a ticket if growl is programmed so that emoticons cannot be displayeD?

In some large feature bump of growl, shouldn't we allow NSAttributedStrings for descriptions? That way you can display images inline.

It could be a problem with using WebKit to display it, though.

Sure it is! :-P
We'll see what we can do in order to make it possible for .8.

Upon a discussion about this subject, we decided not to include this feature. Allowing any application to change the size/font or to add images to the notification is bad. It'll make the notifications no longer uniform which is not what we want.

Yep, that's basically why we aren't doing it, heh.
