Display pics update how often?

Hey,

I'm not sure if this has been answered before, I couldn't find anything on it. but i was just wondering when and how adium updates a contacts display picture (specifically for msn). I just seem to be having issues with the those images updating. The images will only update if a quit and reopen adium. Tried 0.84 and the new final beta of 0.85

Umm on msn it usually takes a lot of time.

When I disconnect and connect back again to MSN, it usually updates.

Takes about 8 mins for my msn contact icons to update.

I have the same issue with MSN contacts. Some of them update instantly, others occasionally, others never. There seems to be no definitive pattern as to whether they update or not. The only thing that is pretty standard is when a contact is first added to your list - their icon won't update for a long, long time (perhaps until they change it?).

One observation: when you delay allowing your account to connect (holding Shift on launch), it seems to be able to pick up more of them when you finally decide to connect.

I have some problems with the contact icons with 0.84. I found that my Adium Caches folder was huge, and the reason was that one contact icon was saved there again and again with different random names. In total it was ~100M of the same cached image.

It does seem random when the images update, but I can't really tell since I don't know when a contact actually changes their pic.

Perhaps we could get an option, maybe in the info window or on right click, to update a single users display picture. Any thoughts on that Devs?

Just trash the blist.xml file if you want to invoke MSN to check the images - it should work (I think).

has anyone of you on msn tried connecting via HTML? mine got display picture changes when I did that.

works when you connect, but refresh times seems to be the same with or without html cheked.

nope has no effect on display pic updating...
even if i delte the blist.xml file

nope no go...

what if adium queried the server for the display pic everytime a chat window was opened with a contact. that would be enough for me at the moment... thoughts on that Devs???

This smells like Gaim to me... you're better off filing a bug report or a feature request on their page - however don't make the problem description about your experience with Adium, talk about how often Gaim (the guts of Adium) checks for display picture updates and stuff.
