Phishing scam (was: adium virus?)

Post by Muzkunh »

Hey

I have a problem with adium right now, someone posted this msg to me:
*mass* ok to all of u people that wont leave me alone and that keep askin what all rares i got, I made a list an u can just go check out the site..I even put in a passys to a couple i dont like, So First Come First Serve!! http://www.geocities.com/horsago And I made one to for some of my favorite bongs and the actual ones that i own.. check em out too http://www.geocities.com/horsago you will pass this on if ur my friend and if u dont pass this on i see who my true friends are

and since it was actually pretty similar to how he talked I clicked on the link and now it sends the same msg to anyone on yahoo. I don't know how to get rid of this and I'm kind of running out of ideas. So... what should I do? I've tried putting in the beta and apparently it's still happening too =/

Wait I'm a little confused on the problem. Do you keep sending this message to people using Yahoo and don't have control over it? Also I'm preety sure it was a bot that messaged you. Only bots IM people like that and piss you off. Can you be a little more specific on what the problem is?

sorry about that.

But yeah, it seems that something is just msging people as me. I originally got that msg, clicked on the link, and then after that I've been having this problem where people complain that they get that msg from me. And yeah, I don't have any control over it.

Have you tried restarting your computer since this has happened? I have no idea whats going on but maybe restarting would help. If you dont know the person and they dont tell you or they seem very odd, don't talk to them.

Well, he said that the message was similar to how the guy talked, so he must know him somewhat.

There's no way that there's a widely distributed virus going around for Adium. Does he use Adium? Is it possible that he wrote some kind of virus for Adium to play a prank on you? That's all I can really think of.

Yeah I don't really think its anything serious. Heres an idea, does the guy that gave you the link know the people that were saying that you were talking to them. That probably didnt make sense again but maybe its all a prank like FredAkbar said.

no that's the thing, I've seen the msg a number of times before coming from other people. It ends up sending you to some strange page in spanish and then shortly after that it seems you end up sending the same msg to other people.

If it is a IM bot how would I go about finding it and getting rid of it?

and I don't think it's a prank, because all the people who have sent it to me, and told me that I sent it to them don't know eachother at all.

You cant really get rid of bots. Thats why people hate them so much. They never shut up and they spam stupid things. At least I dont THINK you can get rid of them. Other than blocking that is. Again have you tried restarting? Did you say this has happened to you before?

Try a google search for a patch, or something. There was one of these things going around, it was different than this one, but my friend found an uninstaller for the virus. I just remember laughing at him cause it didn't effect my mac

I know macs can get viruses but it doesnt happen often at all. You have to ask for one to get one.

Do you mean it LOOKS like a geocities sign-in page? The page no longer exists when I checked just now, so I don't know what you saw. That URL is somebody's homepage, but if you saw a geocities sign-in page when you got there, then that means that somebody just caught you in a phishing scam. You probably entered your username and password and sent it to them, so now they're signed in as you and sending everyone messages. If they haven't already changed your password, I would change it ASAP.

I visited the site using a text browser and viewed source. It looked like and was a sign in page, but I didn't look too hard.

I hope you weren't thinking that I filled that out fox ;)

He might have. I don't think he did though it really doesnt make any sense to login there....Why would it ask for your AIM password and screename and stuff. I could be wrong on this though. I havent really heard of a phishing scam before. I'm still learning! :)
