Edit -> Spelling -> (options) tells us that Cmmd+; will check your spelling and some others. Check that menu for all your options :)
Try my software!

#define ADIUMX pimp //by me
#define QUESTION ((2b) || (!2b))

Open up a new chat window, the cursor should now be blinking in the text entry box, now go up to Edit --> Spelling and a few options should pop out. I keep it on "Check spelling as you type", where it, um, checks spelling as you type, like a word processing app.

bgannin didn't mean that there was literally something called "(options)"...he was just referring to the three choices that it gives you: Spelling..., Check Spelling, and Check Spelling As You Type. Cmd-semicolon (Check Spelling) checks your spelling if you use it when you're in the text input field. Check Spelling As You Type toggles the option of having it underline (in red, like MS Word does) misspelled words in the text input field.

Try having a window open and just pressing "CMD"+":"

That works for me.

I don't think I've seen that window before in OS X (you have to push Cmd-Shift-; to get it, since a colon is made using the Shift key). I prefer Cmd-; for basic spell-checking.

I prefer check while I type... it annoys me so I learn to spell correctly more often :D

What's wrong with Cmd-semicolon? It goes through and highlights the first misspelled word it comes to. And if you want to make it really easy, just turn on Check Spelling As You Type, so that it automatically underlines misspelled words. What exactly do you want to do?

Slightly different than what Arodweb has asked about, but related to spelling... Could there be a way Adium could force me to review a message before sending when there's a spelling mistake?

Welcome to the forums!

This isn't possible in Adium, but it could be added by, say, a plugin. Someone else could write it... but, we won't be adding it ourselves. It's far too intrusive in general.
