Jump to contact

Post by frost3 »

Just like in winamp. There is hotkey which opens a window, you start typing, as you type the list of contacts narrows until you are left with one. Hit enter and youre sending them a message!

Also I noticed that you can't select the list and type a letter to jump to that name. If the above is implement it wouldn't be needed but it is still a feature I'm sure many would enjoy.

Sorry for any reposts of ideas, just trying to help :)

The former is implemented:

Command+N
displays a dialog with a send message to… field which autocompletes
Blog | X(tras)
Communists code without classes.

Jumping in the list would be rather wonky to implement because:

do you jump to -

a) the contact in the current group with that letter
b) the group with that letter
c) the first item (group or contact) that has that letter
d) if not alphabetically sorted it makes it rather annoying to get around from Colleen to Cory and back to Brian, who's after Bob, but only alphabetically.

In terms of jumping the list, I think a combination of your suggetions would work fine. Pressing C would move down to the next item on the list with a C, even if it were out of order. An option could include Groups or not. Although I do admit with Command N I don't think I will need this feature, thanks for the tip!!.

Command N!! is great, the only issue I see with it is it asks you which medium to use. My contact might be confused to get an MSN from my account1@hotmail.com if they have me listed on account2@hotmail.com. Could the default read which list the person is on?

Thanks for the responses and best of luck!

bgannin, i have hoped for some time to be able to select a contact in the contact list by typing the first few characters of the contact's name. this wouldn't be like an autocomplete feature, but more like the feature existing in the finder to select whatever you start typing. (of course, if there are lots of similarly named contacts, you get the first one alphabetically. also like the finder, you could hit tab to go to the next alphabetically.) it doesn't seem to me that this would be too hard to implement and could be really useful.

To elaborate on Brian's post, as it appears he's coming down with a cold or something... write us a patch :)
