1) AIM, IIRC, is something like 200-250 buddies; others, no idea
2) The reason this occurs when moving between groups - it (it being libgaim IIRC, not the protocol itself) removes the contact from the current group and attempts to add them to the new group. If your list is full when reported from the server then *boom* they don't agree.
Others can clarify beyond this, but hopefully it's a start
I'm not going to claim I know the inner workings of libgaim, that's for other, zanier minds than I, but a likely guess would be simple lag between the server and client and being out-of-sync. AIM itself has that rate limit thing were you can't send more than X amount of something in X seconds so that could be a factor too. I'm speculating out me arse a bit, but these could all be reasons... I think
Yeah, this happens to me as well, and I only have 36 contacts. I've been trying for the past day or so to add a contact, and I get the same error every time. What other info do you need from me to solve this bug?
I've done some further research. and this is not an actual problem with adium. I also tried to add the name from iChat and it says the name is invalid. plus, i can still add other names, just not this one. so it's either the server or a bum name.

Yah, it seems to be happening with other clients for me as well. However, I know its not the screen name because i can still talk to them.
This is a weird bug because it isnt consistent. A few days after my first post it started working all of a sudden. Then it stopped again.
Some things that occurred to me:
1) I'm located at University of Washington, which has a fairly strong NAT. I have to trouble getting IMs through, but sometimes it screws with file transfers. They seem to fiddle with it quite a bit too, which could possibly explain the inconsistency. Are you behind a NAT too, mqa?
2) How are the buddy lists stored in Adium/gaim? Are they stored locally for metacontacts and such? Or does it always get it off the server? If its local, it could be a permissions error or something weird like that.
I noticed I have same problem...for this particular screen name it got really few buddies on it. Yet I'm unable to add a buddy due to an error. I'd like to resolve this. How is it achieved? I'd like to keep using this program.
Noticing the same problem. iChat reflects changes I make, but Adium won't update the buddy list when I make changes either in iChat or in Adium after I sign off. It's like it's not updating to reflect what's on the server.
