dock icon or buddy icon?

Menu Bar --> Adium --> Preferences --> Accounts tab --> Click "Edit" button to the account you want to change your buddy icon with --> Personal Tab --> Choose Icons button --> Choose icon and click the "Set" button --> Click OK button in Preferences:Accounts window.

If you're using AIM, there's a good chance your buddy icon won't really get set (currently) because of this.
