You could just zip the folder in the finder if you have OS 10.3 or newer. Control+click on the folder and choose "Create Archive". This will make one, sendable file.

There was talk once that Adium could do this for you, not sure what happened about it...

It'll work in Adium 1.0. There several different issues with folder transfer in .8x.
The duck still burns.
