Emoticon menu keyboard shortcut

Is there or could there be a keyboard shortcut to access the emoticon menu?
I'm too lazy to memorize all of the keyboard entries for all of the emoticons out there, and I love the find-as-you-type feature in the emoticon menu. Now it seems I'm getting too lazy to have to reach over to the mouse and click on the toolbar to access the menu.

I don't think you can assign them to toolbar items.

Why not just enable full keyboard access and go through the menus to Edit -> Insert Emoticon and do the same?

Well that does keep me from having to reach all the way over to my mouse. But don't forget how lazy I am, that adds seven more keys to get where I want to go. Not exactly a shortcut

Does this mean I need to start making emoticon flash cards?

Seems like making the cards would be more work than clicking the mouse
