but when i click on formatting.plist the computer tells me i need to choose an application to open it--what should I select?although not particularly user friendly, here is a way to change the default font. Go to your user folder, then Library:Application Support:Adium 2.0:Users:Default and then open the file "Formatting.plist." Inside you can change the font to whatever you choose (written like this: CenturyGothic,12)

I was following these directions to change my font:
If Developer Tools are installed you can use Property List Editor. If not, TextEdit will open it (and just about any text-based file)
