why do none of my fonts ever work?

Post by Heart »

I've got Arial set as the font used when I'm sending messages, and from my end at least, it looks fine. On the other person's computer however, the font I appear to be using is a really horrible 'system default' one (don't know what it's called, but it's not Lucida Grande or Arial etc).

The only fonts that appear to show up correctly on the other end are Comic Sans and Times New Roman; nothing else works.

I know that if the person at the other end doesn't have the same font I'm using, it won't display - but even fonts like Arial, Courier and Trebuchet (standard Windows fonts) won't show up at their end. And this isn't just one person - this is to everyone I talk to.

Any ideas?

It's because it doesn't work. It's set for you, not them. I wish this would work too.

I'm confused. The font you set when typing text is the font which is sent to the other side... works fine for me. What exactly isn't working?

The font set when typing text appears fine for me at my end. But it's never sent to the other side, even usign fonts like Arial or Trebuchet. Only Comic Sans and Times New Roman will ever show up properly - fonts which most people will agree is the work of Lucifer himself.

I even tried installing my friend's (Windows) copies of fonts like Arial, in case there was something wrong with my fonts - to no avail.

Are you setting the font with the controls in the Messages preferences? That's only the display font, only you can see it. Try highlighting your text and setting the font by hitting Command-T

No, I'm setting my font with apple-T.

come to think of it - why have two different ways in which to set your display font where one of those ways won't have any effect on the other user? It seems a bit supurfluous (sp?)

The item in the Messages preferences needs to be reworked.

But I'm assuming most people's fonts show up fine on the other person's computer without any problems?

yeah, i think i'm having the same problem too.

here's what i've found is a good way to test it:

1. File / New chat...
2. Create a Chat to yourself by entering the same account in From and To
3. Type your message, select the typed text, and Apple-T to change font
4. Close the Font window, send the message

both a sent message and a received message will now appear in the Chat. on my computer, neither the sent or received messages's fonts appear the same as the font when typing the message. the sent message's font looks kinda similar, though not quite right; but the received message's font is completely different.

appologies if i'm simply preaching to the converted here.
