How do you make your own smilies set?

Post by iCait »

Like http://www.adiumxtras.com/index.php?a=xtras&xtra_id=480 that, I want to do that, but I don't know how, so if you know, can you be really kind and tell me how, please? Thank you.

Take care,
Cait :)

Do you mean the drawing the emoticons or the formatting files? Or both?

download an existing one and control click and choose "show package contents". You should be able to see how they work fairly easily.

I think both. :oops: There's a few emoticons I want to know how to be used like when you are typing with someone you use them. I hope you understand what I mean. :oops:

haha i dont think i do understand :( But ill trya and explain something and hopefully its what your asking.

TO EDIT AN EMOTICON SET:
Go to Home -> Library -> Application Support -> Adium 2.0 -> Emoticons
What i did to learn what to do was copy an existing set of emoticons and then change them to my desire. To do this right click (or control click) on an .adiumemoticonset and select "Show package contents". What you should see is lots of image files (the emoticons) and a file named "emoticons.plist"

I guess I'll stop now since im probably telling you something that has nothing to do with your question :D

Oh you have to make them? You can't take them from a forum and make them be used on a set of emoticons? I ask because there is a set that I'd love to use for my MSN/iChat emoticons. (I'm sorry if you guys don't understand what I'm asking :oops:).

first you have to take the icons off the site. This can be done by either dragging them off to a folder or right clicking and saving them. Then rename them to more suitable names. The next step is probably easiest done by taking an xtra pack you like (you can find it in ~/application support/adium 2.0/Emoticons, then making a copy of it, right clicking it and show package contents. Then delete all the picture files (not the .plist file) and put in your pictures. Open up the .plist file and take a look at how it works.

Code: Select all

<key>advice.gif</key>
		<dict>
			<key>Equivalents</key>
			<array>
				<string>advice</string>
				<string>Advice</string>
				<string>ADVICE</string>
			</array>
			<key>Name</key>
			<string>advice</string>
		</dict>
this is basically the part that you need to keep copy pasting to make an emoticon work. The first line <key>advice.gif</key> is the file name, change it to the file name of one of your emoticons. the list under Equivalents that says advice is the letters you want to type to trigger this emoticon(case sensitive). So if you wanted to make an emoticon thats trigger by :) and :D then you would replace the first advice with :) and the second with :D and delete the third (similarly if you want even more combos for an emoticon you can just keep copy pasting the last line). The part under Name is what you want the name for this emoticon to show as.

hope this helps

I prefer editing the emoticons.plist file with Property List Editor. Just seems easier to learn for me.

property list editor is only available with the 1.5gb dev tools so i assumed he did not have it nor does he want to download that much for such a tiny app
