Avoid Cell Phone Forwarding

Post by Coolnat2004 »

Well, to explain my problem let me present you with a scenario.

You are speaking to a friend in Adium (AIM) and they suddenly sign off, causing any further messages to be bounced off to their cell phone. Since Adium makes no sound when this happens (considered a status change I suppose), you go ahead and send another message. You then realize that it was sent to their cell phone, causing a disturbance and possibly money for the other party.

What I want is something that will keep me from encountering this: perhaps warning me when I am about to send a message to a cell phone the first time in a specified time period / conversation.

I'm kind of wondering why you feel responsible for the cost of sending an IM to someone's phone when they've obviously gone and enabled it in the first place themselves.

Well, in this particular case, it does not cost extra for the IM, but I do know that it would be annoying to find a message on my cell phone that wasn't really meant to go to the cell phone.

It's their fault for setting up their account like that.

..Though it is not their fault that I accidentally sent a message to their phone since I did not notice the icon in the contact list.

Can this at least be implemented as an event so that a sound or other action can be assigned to it?

Yeah but it can be annoying for either party for all kinds of reasons. In MSN, the (relatively annoying) banner changes to let you know you'll be sending to a phone, and in Live Messenger 8 there is some extra text at the top. I actually would find it useful if there was some kind of visual notification (banner, background color of text input area changes, whatever) that the message you're typing up would go to a mobile device, no matter what service.

Situations that I'm talking about are stuff like someone losing their net connection for just a minute or two (sending to a cell then by accident really is annoying), or similar issues.

Am I understanding correctly that their icon changes but you don't notice? And you're looking for perhaps a notification within the chat window that "name is now using a mobile device"?

I would say I mostly notice, but I can't really say for sure since I've lately been using Live Messenger and not Adium (PC laptops, boo). I know I failed to notice enough times that I've ended up sending text messages when I didn't mean to.

It's not a huge pet peeve or anything but the original post just kind of made me think that it'd be nice to have a bit more of a notice that you're about to message a mobile device.

And yes, a notification of some sort within the chat window would be nice. "Within the chat window" is the instrumental part, I think any type of pop-up or message window outside the chat window would be more annoying than anything else. I think people differ highly on what kind of within-the-window notification they prefer though.

I don't think a status message when a screenname goes to/from mobile while you've been chatting would be unreasonable. Someone should file a Trac ticket with the request.

I guess I'll give that a shot.

Is it customary to include a link to the forum thread for trac tickets, if they've been discussed?

I'm not sure it's customary, but it should be :)

I decided to just include it anyway, so lucky me :)

I wasn't sure what to set the milestone or anything else as, so I suppose someone might want to fix it up a bit.

Personally, I think this would be very smart.

bump.

How hard is this to do? I'd be happy with just a growl alert saying they've gone mobile. If you are already changing the icon, its obvious that the status change is known by the application. Sounds like a simple call / one-liner.

Heck.. if someone would point me in the right direction, I'd fix it myself.
