HUD windows are usually like 80 - 90% opacity, the controls on them being 100% or close to it IIRC. Thus it wouldn't be a problem in my posited suggestion. [and if necessary, a background around the profile could remain for this exception]
I agree about info windows being HUDs, it's cool. The way it's looking, we will be seeing a lot of HUDs from apple soon, and from other developers soon later. they are catching on well.
Isn't the correct term for HUD a Dashboard? I know it's confusing with the actual Dashboard environment, but that what The Steve™ calls it.
But I agree, it does look sweet, and a Dashboard style Info window would be secksy. I think I'll mock on eup and see what I think. If you take a look at the nightly WebKit builds, they have an elemet inspector that I think would be a good base to start from.

Life's not too short, you're just dead for so long.
If I'm not mistaking, HUD windows are implemented in the ProKit framework. The only problem is that it's a private framework
I think a simple class-dump may give us whatever we need in order to use Apple's HUD windows, and it's not like Adium uses only public classes...

I see no point in recreating this from scratch.

WebKit's inspector is done with JavaScript and whatnot, it's not actually Objective-C/Cocoa. The only issue with using Apple's ProKit framework is that this is simply 1 style of HUD that will end up marrying ourselves to [since many, even the teams within Apple, will end up rolling their own] and requires the presence of the ProKit, which I think only comes with the Pro apps (unless I'm mistaken)
sorry for bumping, but 3 things:
1. how are we going on this front? I still think a HUD get info window is way cool.
2. just had an idea, how about putting a "inspector" icon in the chat toolbar, and make that open the info window? more than once I was in the middle of a chat and I wanted to get some info about my contact etc.
3. I thinks that the info window should be redone (not only "HUDised"*), but actually reorganised, I remember, the first time I used the get info window, I just couldn't figure out how it worked and what it did...
1. No change.
2. Isn't there a toolbar item already? If not, definitely seems like an oversight.
3. It likely would, at least to some degree, but that goes hand in hand with (1)
