Case for pinheads

Comparison

i made the color scale "pure white" to be as neutral as i can in color distinctions. the case im trying to make, at this point, is purely based on size of icon. color is another issue that (IMO) is relevant after optimum size of icon has been established.

heres case #1 for pinheads (ichat CL style pre packaged with adiumx)

CL style with Gems

in the determining that adiumx needed a new default look, i do not think it would be prudent to suggest that along with a new default CL theme and colors scheme, a new status icon be considered for the default adiumx.

thank you for looking.

feed back is more than welcome, at this point im more so trying to make a statement on icon size. I belive color adjustment needs to be made, if you have any ideas on this matter, dont be shy.

Also, if you have any comparisons that you would like to make between Gems and pinheads, please suggust them. its important to note that all of these themes were created with Gems in mind.

please keep comments constructive :D.

Here's what I came up with as a default. It uses standard fonts and font sizes that should work across the board, and it uses the iBubble Status icons included in the SVN build right now (which IMO should become the default). It also uses the standard aqua colors for the repeating background.

Sorry, I meant to mention that it's Lucinda Grande, which I read earlier in this thread is used elsewhere in Adium. The users and groups font are 11px (the groups are bold), and the status font is 10px.

Interesting tidbit:
The default (system) font for Mac OS X is Lucida Grande 13, which should be used in Adium pretty regularly barring the smaller Lucida Grande 11 which is sometimes used.

Sorry if this is obvious, but are these screenshots with the user icon, name and status all in the unified toolbar from SVN builds?

I thought the 13 size was too huge, which is why I went with 11. Here's what it looks like with a text size of 13 for the groups and users and 11 for the status text:

All Tango and Flight variants certifiably use pre-packaged Mac OS X fonts. We settled on the font over and above Lucinda Grande because we believe it feels more in tone over different point sizes.

I'm not sure about iBubble being the default icon pack. It's dead nice, but it can look bloated and cluttered, especially on more compact lists (which many if not most Adium users strive towards). Example:

My other complaint with them is that on certain lists it's hard to see that they are speech bubbles - they can look like a bit like squished circles.

As I said, they're dead nice and can be divine in larger lists, but they're just not universal enough for me.

I'm not sure what the default icon pack should be; just voicing my concerns.

Probably, haven't used iChat in a long time. Also it makes the menu at the top look tiny in comparison. ;)

I find it interesting that virtually every suggestion has been, in a word, Aqua.

Seems that Apple really are the lords of design!

Well the basis for this was to figure out a new default theme - it'd have to be pretty aqua since the biggest complaint from the recent threads has been that Adium doesn't look "mac like."

I was wondering how you made your toolbar look like that? It looks a lot like how iChat's toolbar is.

That's the complaint of people we are largely ignoring. :P The "eye candy" argument is silly. The "Adium's current defaults could be a lot better" argument isn't only a good argument, it's true.
The duck still burns.

Nah guys!

What I meant was that the end result of virtually anyone trying to make a universally pretty contact list style has shown itself to be Apple's own aqua style - me included.

We're all working towards excellence and it's just interesting that we all came up with the same result, bar for some tweaks here and there :)

That's Adium 1.x, developmental version. You can obtain it under the Support and Development section of the site.

I wasn't advocating a list font size of 13, simply noting some trivia. 11 looked fine.

Please be careful when making such large generalizations as the one at the end of the above quote, as assertions typically tend to be colored by personal preference, not factual backing.
