How to initiate direct connect?

Post by stevekelley »

Hello,

I'm a new Mac and Adium user. In the documentation, it says dragging a picture to the IM will initiate a direct IM, but when I drag an image it initiates a file transfer instead. What am I doing wrong!?

First, as I understand it, Direct IM and File Transfer are basically the same thing under the hood. It's the same transfer process going on.

Second, they hardly ever work on Adium, which is pretty much the only thing I dislike about it.

You are doing nothing wrong. If I recall correctly, the image will only appear in the chat window once the file transfer has completed (if it appears in the chat window at all, I'm not actually sure if it does :?) Unfourtunately, direct IM and file transfer don't work very well in the current version of Adium, but will be greatly improved when 1.0 is released. (Yay! :D)

As said before, this will work better in 1.0

The problem is even if direct IM and file transfer are the same under the hood, the other user is prompted to receive a file and has to choose a place for it rather than it being streamlined into the IM. Oh well.

That's in part DirectIM in Adium 0.8x is unabashedly terrible. It will work properly in Adium 1.0, as mentioned above.
The duck still burns.
