Adium ICQ block not working and what is going on with ICQ?

Post by Greg »

Alright, I've had an ICQ account since like 1997 but rarely used after the great AIM switch whenever one I knew just started using AIM. Anyhow a year or two ago when Protues and Adium started maturing I found my old ICQ number and password. Its more there to justify using Adium then suddenly, BAM, the past two-three weeks I've become flooded with random chatters, some spam and some wierdos. I don't why.

Anyhow, last night I got a rather interesting character saying an incoherent msg like "I am some doing thing" from a user. I hit block and it kept sending. So I just replied to see what it was about... bad idea, person keeps msging me "I wont to **** you" among other things, claiming to be a 19 year old girl. At first I thought it might be a friend of mine who never grew up trying to mess with me but it wasn't. Seeing as block wasn't working I said, "Go away" and just let them msg me mindlessly until I turned ICQ off, then this morning fired up adium, came back from classes and I received 4 random chatters including my new friend with the "I wont to **** you" msg.

Anyhow, I've turned ICQ off again but does Block not work in Adium and what is going on with ICQ random chatters? I keep getting supposed girls from the Ukraine or some other far off place wanting to chat after years of just ICQ sitting there. Any tips? Right now I'm postulating that my profile (which as a picture) might be to blame. Its been years since I've had superficial chatters, "OMG, YOU'RE CUTE. WANNA 2 CHAT?" and figured Myspace took care of that.

Okay, nabbing the update...

"ICQ "web aware" mode has now been turned off; it was responsible for a significant portion of the authorization request spam many ICQ users were receiving."

That might be it, not even sure what web aware is...
