when i down loaded this i went into it and it asked me what program i want to use to open it what do i do

Where are you downloading it from? Isnt the latest release .89.1?

no i just downloaded the normal one from the site and i put it into a new file but when i double click it, it asks me what program i would like to run it in. what do i choose

What do you mean by "put it into a new file" ?

When you download it, you should get a disk image, a.k.a. a .dmg.

Double click that, and when it opens, drag the Duck into your Applications folder.

Or is it asking you what program to use when you double click Adium after you have done all those things?
