skype implementation

Post by MacZilla »

As skype is more then voice over internet, but also a messenger, would it be interesting to ad skype to the list as well?

And also:
Voice via ichat or skype, is there a future here for Adium?

greets

Welcome to the Forums.

A quick search will turn up 10+ threads mentioning voice/video chat support. It's also in the sticky thread at the top of this forum.

As to Skype... likely not very soon as they've got Yet Another Proprietary Protocol to be sniffed, reverse-engineered, and recreated. Add in custom encryption/compression IIRC and that makes tons of work :P

!!! they have an SDK? Man, for a project started by the Kazaa folks they sure are doing things pretty much correctly (a few minor nitpicks like the fugly non-editable UI, but hey it's a Cocoa app using Altivec, that implies at least some care in the port).

http://www.skype.com/community/devzone/doc.html says "Skype API is initially only available for and supported on Microsoft Windows."

Right, but we could probably pick up on what they are doing based on what they have provided.

Perhaps. If they provided a Cocoa or generic C++ SDK, I'd dive in.

Seems rather wishful as they are in the middle of their big status rewrite and continuing to improve file transfer (most likely).

Besides, the library/SDK needs to flexible enough to work on all platforms, which it isn't (Windows only), and appropriately licensed to be amenable to open-source projects.

I got and idea to implement audio (and also video ) on Adium , ohPhone X , its an opensource project that allows video conferencing with net meeting and it could be modified to send /receive video and audio for the IM protocols (Y! , MSN , AIM) (http://xmeeting.sf.net)

I would put a good amount of money on this not happening in the next couple of months... unless you know someone who is willing to write and maintain the plugin (none of the current developers are going to take on such a mammoth task).

A neat project... although this stood out to me from the current client that supports it "PC-to-Phone (not yet available to Mac OS X users)" The other key is what kind of interface they provide (be it framework, library, or glop of code to deal with)

Not be evil, but there's not likely to be any movement any time soon on this. It's a branch of a majorly requested feature that would likely confuse a bunch of users and require a lot of extra hacking that I don't think anybody has the time to spare for. It's not to say it isn't interesting, could lead to something someday, but definitely not any time soon unless I'm wrong.

Aye, agreed. But skype seems to have the best file transfer for a "im" client that I've ever seen. Either way, I think I need some waffles.

also, sites that flatly deny using such things often do, since it usually means that they've been accused of it before, with or without grounds.
