Gmail accounts in Adium?

Post by Marge »

I don't know if this has bene asked before, but I was wonderig whether it is possible to sign in with a gmail-account in Adium. I know it is possible with MSN Messenger, but since I'm using Adium, MSn Messenger is completely out of my life. The option isn't in the drop-down menu when you create a new account, but maybe it works when you use a different type of account?

And if this is not possible, would you try to allow it in the next version of Adium? Because when that works, I can dump that stupid hotmail and finally be out of Microsoft products!

hey marge, i asked dchoby about gmail notifications in the IRC channel and he did not convey any notion that would make me belive it will be implemented. it dosnt have to do with messaging, so i think adium is going to steer clear of it. i belive something like this is availabe in firefox..

besure to search the forum topics for this, i think it has been talked about beofre

I don't see the point to having gmail in Adium. It's not related to instant messaging at all. You can check gmail in Mail.app (or any other e-mail client), use gCount or GmailStatus. It doesn't make any sense to add this to Adium.

To clarify:

We support MSN and Yahoo (and AOL, if you have it) email notifications because those services tie your messenger to an email address. But, GMail isn't attached to any messegner, so we'd basically be striking out into the land of email clients. That's not going to happen. :)

it's not about mail notifications, i will use Mail.app for that. Maybe I haven't been clear enough, sorry for that, but I'm not a native speaker, so sometimes it's difficult :)
My point is: my brother can log on to the MSN network with his gmail address and chat with his friends who have an MSN-account, but he uses MSN Messenger for that. Is it possible to do the same thing with Adium?

You can log into MSN with any valid .net Passport. You can register a new .net passport here -> http://www.passport.net/

So, register a .net passport for your gmail email address and you should be good to go for connecting to MSN (Either in the official client or Adium).

Is there any chance that we will get .Mac mail notifications?

Do you get them in any other client?

It's not something the protocol supports.
