Viewing info for people not on contact list.

Post by Hellmark »

One thing I've always kinda wondered about, is why I cannot view the information of people not in my contact list. Yes, I know that I can use "Get Information for Contact" and enter in the information by hand, or pull up a chat window for that person, and hit the get info button that way, however, when the Information window is actually up, the Status and Profile boxes are empty, and remain empty. As soon as I add the person, I can follow the same exact steps I did before, and this time, their profile comes up. This is really annoying, since I often get contacted by people I do not know, and do not wish to have in my contact list. In situations like that, now I have to goto the webpage for the IM service, and view the profile through that, if the service even has an option to do that.

What service are you using?
I think in some protocols profiles can only be viewed by people on the person's contact list, but that doesn't explain why you can see it in a browser.

AIM, ICQ, MSN, and Yahoo all exhibit the same issues (those are just what I use). I know its not an issue with the services, because when I use Gaim on my linux boxes (and we all know that Adium is libgaim based) on any of these services, I can pull up the profile of someone not on my contact list without an issue.

This has been fixed in the upcoming 1.0 release.

I was asking because in the latest beta release that I've used (1.0b6), it hadn't been fixed.

Edit: Tested Google Talk, with the same exact results. Evands closed the ticket again, claiming its a protocol specific issue, but how can it be a protocol issue when so far 4 separate protocols for 5 separate services all exhibit the same issue?
