can't change the font color

i've been messing around with the preferenes for message style for ages and for some reason, i can't customize my font color. i can only choose the type of font and it's size but nothing else! i'm getting so frustrated. i want to change it so i can properly use different message styles, partiuclarly GoneDark. My text comes out black on the msg window which is very hard to see, while i receive a white text from the person i'm chatting with.
