AIM problems

Post by spitfire915 »

I am using Adium X 0.89.1 and I have problems with the AIM part of it. I use AIM a lot and am stuck with iChat because every time I try to talk to someone on AIM using Adium, my DSL modem literally crashes and resets itself. It only does that when someone replies to me. I have talked with a few people and one said it was Adium and one said it was my router (Linksys EtherFast Cable/DSL Router with 4-Port Switch). I dont know where else to go except here. I have not tried Adium Beta yet because I dont know if I want to, but if this problem cannot be solved without the beta, I will use the beta.

There is no way Adium is crashing your DSL modem...whoever told you that needs a CAT scan ;)

Can you describe your problem further?

haha ISPs are told to blame the program before the hardware. Anyway, I will tell you what happens. I go to a new chat with someone and type something. Within 5 seconds after they reply to me, the DSL modem crashes. A few people have said it is the router and I have upgraded the firmware, tried port forwarding, and all that. One person told me that the reason it may be the router is because AIM sends a bunch of packets to the server to keep the connection alive or something like that.

I have to think that this is entirely coincidental. Now, what do you mean, exactly, by "my DSL modem crashes"

What happens to it?

It resets itself. Like its possessed or something. I dont know if you have a DSL modem, but mine has a reset button on it. What happens is the same thing that happens when you push the reset button. The system light blinks, then the DSL light (re-acquiring the connection), then the connection returns finally and I can plug it back in to the router. If the modem is plugged into the router while its re-acquiring the connection, the connection never comes back.

That last part is very odd. It sounds to me your issue is most definitely with your DSL modem/router combo.

Have you tried looking up if people have had issues using the same combo of dsl modem/router that you are using?

They really shouldn't have an issue, but to think Adium is somehow crashing your DSL modem is probably more far fetched.

Yeah I highly doubt that Adium is the problem. I have done a lot of research and I guess it is either the router or modem, but they say "resolve it with your ISP" and of course they are no help. All they do is blame Adium. The weirdest thing is, AIM in Adium doesnt work but AIM in iChat and the official AIM client does. That I do not understand which is why it is hard to find the source of the problems.

Reminds me of a time where someone's ISP told them Adium was causing them to use all their bandwidth...or something along those lines.

I really don't know what to tell ya. I'm sure someone much more knowledgeable will come along soon...there's lots of those types on these boards...so just stay tuned :)

Well I just got done talking to EarthLink (my ISP). They confirmed it is the router and I need to get a new one. Thanks for your time.
