Question about emoticons

For some reason I've never thought about this....

When I send a smiley to another person, is the graphic dependent upon what they have selected as an emoticon set in their computer or mine? I just spotted an emoticon set that had a 'ninja' smiley. I have no idea what the character code for that is (or why I would ever want to use it!!) but if I downloaded it and sent that graphic, what would the person on the other end see?

If it's based on their computer's selected set, then if I send a smiley that they don't have, it could mean something to me but be meaningless to them?

Just curious since I've seen some really fun sets with some really inventive graphics. But I always hesitate to use them.

Yes. Custom smileys sending is impossible in Adium.
