AIM kicking me off

Post by yg17 »

I'm using Adium 0.89.1, and it's kicking me off AIM immediately after signing me in. Then it will sign in, kick me off, rinse and repeat. I tried it in iChat. Same. I reluctantly downloaded the official AIM client, and it works. Anyone else having these troubles? Is AOL back to banning 3rd party clients? Thanks

The same thing is happening in iChat?

For the record, iChat is not a 3rd party client...it is an official AIM client.

Have you tried using someone elses screen name to see if its just your computer or the client itself?

Is there any noticeable difference between these 2 computers? Such as internet connection etc

When it worked, it was when I brought my Powerbook to campus, so different ISPs at the time. I've got a Powermac G5 at home.

I just upgraded to beta 14, and I think it may have solved my problem, I just have to wait for that damn tempban to expire from connecting so many times

Adium & iChat Not Connecting to AIM

Post by JosephDP »

I'm seeing the exact same behavior, using Adium 0.89.1 and iChat 3.1.5 (v440) on a MacBook Pro with MacOSX 10.4.8.

In Adium, when I try to connect to AIM, Adium logs me in and I see connected, then I'm thrown off, and I'm asked for my password again. Checking on "remember password" doesn't seem to work.

In iChat, when I try to connect, my status changes from connected to available, and I briefly see my buddy list, then, I get the error message "The connection to the host was unexpectedly lost".

From some other Adium support documentation, I've triedy using the Keychain First Aid utility in the KeychainAccess.app, but no errors are reported or repaired. In KeychainAccess.app, I see two Adium related entries, and others that may be related to iChat

Adium.
Adium.Yahoo!.1
AIM: <screenName>
<dot-macAddress> AIM signing

Is that first Adium-dot-<nothing> keychain valid or just plain wrong?

I can log into AIM, using the Windows AIM client on another machine at the same location as my MacBook Pro. I can log into iChat and see the buddy list using my dot-Mac account. This would seem to make it an AIM problem or, maybe, a keychain problem.

Any ideas? Or should I just move to the beta 1.x Adium?

UPDATE: A short time after posting this, I got the GAIM error message in Adium about connecting and disconnecting too frequently. Also, most oddly, I was in KeyChainAccess.app at the time the Adium message popped up, and a new KeyChain entry appeared at the same time:

Adium.AIM.10

And NO, I still can't connect to AIM. :???:

I am having a similar problem I think. My adium and even ichat have constantly been giving me the message about connecting too many times. This happens consistently whether I have been connecting a lot or not. I will leave adium off all day and try to connect at night and get the error message. I've tried to get on in iChat with the same results. Once in a while I can get on. Not often. I try to leave it for a while and then try to sign on to no avail. Any ideas?

Do you use a proxy to connect to AIM?

Proxy or DMZ in the way

Post by JosephDP »

I haven't had a chance to test this but I think you're on the right track.

As the first poster who started this topic, I discovered that I can connect to AIM from our other offices and from public WiFi hotspots, but not from the office where I normally work. Your question reminded me that we had installed a DMZ, but no true proxy server, to provide public access to a test machine some time back. The test server [one of the Sun "try and buy" servers] is gone, but the two router configuration remains.

I'm guessing that setting up a true proxy, and configuring adium and iChat to use it, or getting rid of the two router configuration, will solve the problem. Hopefully, I'll be able to work on it this weekend, and report back.

Going from having two routers between the DSL router and WiFi to having a single router seems to have fixed it. I suspect that if I had a proper proxy server set up, and had told Adium about the proxy, all would be well too.

'Tis odd though, that AIM accounts in Adium were stopped by this, but not Y!M accounts, and that iChat is sometimes but not always, affected.
