typing indicator

Post by dkocolin »

I'm curious how the typing indicator works, mainly for AIM

If I close an IM window with a buddy, the buddy list still changes their color when they start typing to me for a period... but then it stops after a while.

What's the cutoff? And how does it work? Does the server know I closed the window and stop sending the packet or does my client just stop listening?

If you're using the beta, it'll do this even if you haven't talked to someone. At least, that's what I've seen.

I think it has to do with whether or not they close their message window and thus "end the conversation."

don't quote me, I'm not a dev and have never ever looked at the gaim or adium code - but that seems to be the rule for me. As long as the other guy has a message window open with me, I can see the contact list typing indicator change.
