Your MSN buddy list is temporarily unavailable???

Post by pengu »

I have been using Adium 0.89.1 quite happily, but today suddenly i get the following error:

Code: Select all

stephennerd@hotmail.com (MSN) : Gaim error
Your MSN buddy list is temporarily unavailable. Please wait and try again.
any ideas? i was online today using a windows box, and it worked fine.

i tried the latest beta (1.0b14) and it does not resolve the issue.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hmm it seems someone else has the same problem over here http://forums.cocoaforge.com/viewtopic. ... ght=#74950

When you say it worked on a PC was this after having problems with Adium or before?

Do you all live in the same area? Just a thought.

It's a long shot but every so often (twice in three years of using MSN) my account has just stopped working for a day or two (also happened to my brother). I'm just surprised you both had a similar problem at the same time.

Well, its the next day... and I'm still getting the same error.

I'm in Quebec, Canada... by the way...

Edit: now that I think about it... I did use (for the first time ever) Windows Live Messenger yesterday while I was at work. Then came home and haven't been able to access my contact list since.

Think that WLM might have borked it????!

This happened to me too, starting yesterday. I can connect fine to AIM but not to MSN. However, MSN Messenger doesn't properly connect either. I thought it might have been due to updating to OS X 10.4.8 but even booting under my old drive with a previous OS didn't work.

I would have to believe that Microsoft changed something, somewhere and we will have to wait for that to be fixed or make a new account with MSN.

Oh yeah, I guess I should also mention that AIM and both my Google accounts still work perfectly. The only one broken is MSN.

I will be trying to logon with it in a few different locations later today... will post results.

// OH MAN. So I just tried my girlfriends account (same computer, still with Adium)... and it worked perfectly right off the bat. Was running Windows Live Messenger once enough to completely bork my account?! GOD DAMN.

I am in Montreal and I cannot get Adium, nor aMSN to sign into my account with the same error:

Your MSN buddy list is temporarily unavailable.

Funny enough,I created a test MSN account with no buddies and that works. I am pretty sure it worked a couple of days ago during the weekend. I'll try again from San Francisco later this week.

I tried Windows Live Messenger and I can sign on without issue. MSN Messenger for Mac also fails.

Just an aside . . . I have never used Windows Live Messenger and I'm having this issue so I don't think that's the culprit. Must just be a batch of hosed accounts or something. If I could figure out how I created the account in the first place, I'd try another. *L*

Yeah, I just downloaded the official MSN for Mac client to test... and I get an error, too:

"Sign in to Microsoft Messenger failed because the server is not responding. The service is not available or you may not be connected to the internet."

So, what I'm wondering is: did one server go down that happened to have all of our accounts on it? (but not my girlfriends)

Is there a way of hearing when that server comes back online?

edit: according to the Microsoft support site:
"Network Status: The network services are available; there are no known network issues at this time."

The strange thing for me is that the MSN official client works for me. Not giving me any errors.

So here's what I figure happened, based on what I've read so far, and what's been happening since this morning.

It's not neccesarily a location issue, we've had reports from Australia, US, and everywhere in between. I'm in Jamaica, and I haven't been able to sign in to MSN from Adium (using the latest beta), or from MSN Messenger for Mac, on any of the three Mac I have available here at my office.

To be more exact, I cannot load my contact list. I can sign in, just can't see anyone. This is confirmed by the messages I get on the PC I have successfully managed to sign in to, saying that I have signed on from another computer. Prior to this, I hadn't used Windows Live Messenger in a month. Everything was working fine until sometime this morning.

I tried signing in with another MSN account I have (not an MSN passport address like @hotmail or @msn or @passport.com), and it worked, contact lists loaded and everything. But moving my contact list over to the new account would mean reauthorization requests for more than a hundred people, something I'm trying to avoid.

So I'm guessing somehow my contact list got corrupted, or something. I noticed when I managed to sign in to Windows Live Messenger, there was a notable pause of maybe 2 minutes before my contact list updated itself to what my display name was last night.

Anyways, guess I'm stuck with Windows Live today... hope my post shed some light on the situation.

Re: Update

Post by jthawke »

As I don't have access to a PC, there wasn't much I could do. Even the passport website wouldn't allow me to log in to my account as it requires IE for Windows. So I just created a new "limited" account with a passport.com address and then reset up Adium to use that. So far, it works great but I did have to re-authorize a couple of users to chat again.

My guess is that the "buddy list" corrupted in some fashion on their server and if that list can't load, you can't connect.

Not sure what happened or why, but this may be the only solution unless microsoft figures out how to fix data files.
