Beginning yesterday, when I open Adium I receive the following message:
Yahoo! system message for (my screen name):
Your contact is using Windows Live (MSN) Messenger and wants to add you to his or her Messenger List. To start sharing instant messages you’ll first need to get the latest Yahoo! Messenger with Voice at http://messenger.yahoo.com/download.php.
I don't know what to do with this, because of course the whole point in using Adium is not to have to have 5 separate IM clients. There seems to be no Adium update (I'm on 0.89.1) that might address this.
Has anyone else seen this? and does anyone have suggestions about what it means or what to do? All my contacts seem to be coming and going normally.
Thanks!

Adium 0.89.1 doesn't support the Yahoo<-->MSN interactivity; the message you're receiving is sent by the server and so wants you to download the official client. At this point, you'd need to do so to be able to talk to whatever MSN person is trying to contact you via MSN.
Of course, since it's Adium, you could just add an MSN account and talk to the person directly
At some point in the future -- possibly 1.0, possibly not -- we'll support talking to Yahoo contacts on MSN and visa versa.

Thanks for this info. I forgot to mention I am on OS 10.4.8, and I did see some other issues around that. I have been on Adium 0.89.1 since its release in - April? I think; and updated to 10.4.8 at least a couple of weeks ago, but yesterday was the first time I'd seen this message.
The odd thing is that I DO have an MSN account (I use Adium for Yahoo, AIM, MSN, Gmail, and Jabber) - and, when you say "talk to the person directly", do you mean, download the MSN client? which, again, I don't want to do. Or do you mean TALK (voice) instead of IM? which I can't do either, since I'm at work in an open-office situation.
It sounds to me like it's a generic server message, as you say, just trying to get me to use their client instead - because I'm not having any trouble connecting to any of my normal contacts.
Thanks for your reply.

It does. The SoC project for Gaim which did the new MSN protocol has this working based on commit messages, but it's not ready for primetime in other departments, I believe. The Yahoo side requires a protocol upgrade which is already present in libgaim 2... but which seems to have broken authorization requests and file transfers so we'll probably revert that upgrade if it's not fixed.
re: Yahoo + Messenger notice when opening Adium
Is there any way to stop Adium from popping up the system alert?
the reason u have that alert is becuase u have a pending request fr a windows live user. You could dnld the latest yahoo beta messenger and then accept/reject the request....or u could tell whoever u think made the request to withdraw it. I did the former and it did the trick for me. now when i go thru Adium i dont get that annoying alert.
i think sanjay is correct, but i can't verify because i never got this message. What I did was, that i was curious about this, so i added someone in Yahoo Messenger 3, the person was a Windows Live user. And yes if I go to Adium 1.0 b14, sometimes i can see the person online in Yahoo and even talk to them.
