Adium is great, but....

Post by pedromperez80 »

Hello,

I believe that Adium right now is the best IM client for the mac out there, however it lacks of OS X feeling or most commonly known Aqua.
Adium most take the step to make an interface that complies with mac OS X. Gush out there has a great interface, but lacks of perfomance.

I'am a great supporter of the Adium project, and I hope it keeps becoming even better.

Um... what? How does Adium not have an Aqua interface? All of the windows are Aqua, except the contact list, which can look like whatever the heck you want (including Aqua).

An interface that complies with Mac OS X? It's written in Cocoa, and developed in XCode, so I'm not sure how much more compliant you want it to get.

how can you compare the interface of Gush (which is written in Flash or Director or something) to Adium in it's Cocoa/Aqua glory?

ummm pedromperez80 you're going to have to be a bit more specific, but one of the reasons that most people use Adium is because of it's excellent GUI that can be customized quite a bit.
Here's a toast to the brave devs of Adium!

As stated, Gush is horribly non-standard, has no platform-specific/endemic UI, uses a windows-in-window interface (not allowed by Apple's own HIG).

Adium has an Aqua interface IF YOU SO CONFIGURE IT. Adium doesn't have an Aqua interface IF YOU SO CONFIGURE IT.

He has a point that Adium uses a lot of custom widgets. I do wonder if he has any suggestions for ways of using native ones that wouldn't look terrible.

Many apps have custom widgets with non-standard interfaces. Apple Loops are a great example of a custom, non-standard UI that is much like Adium (transparent, non-Aqua, no real 'obvious' solutions)

How?

Got some suggestions? Mockups are welcome.
pedromperez80 wrote: Gush out there has a great interface, but lacks of perfomance.
Gush is a proof of concept more than anything else. I'd rather you compare to other Aqua applications than a flash one, if you must compare.

Glad to hear it.

On a side note, guys let him answer, set down the hateraid.

i actually wanted to say something about this, but refrained because its not all that important.. (im totally gunna get tiger pounced on this one)

i think what people miss most about a messenger when the switch to adium is a buddy list window.. alike to ichat.

now ok ok ok ok... right, we all hate ichat.. i dislike it too.. but the buddy list window is something that is missed by some. so what im suggesting is redoing the regular window theme for a contact list.. so that it is more familiar to those who want something like that.

not sure if this has been mentioned the past, i dont know how hard this would be to implement, just a suggestion :D

Besides the metal/aqua difference, the built-in iAdium contact list layout is identical to iChat's, isn't it?

Which sums up the reason these debates are getting a bit silly.

it is, but its also missing buttons that are readily available in a standard window theme, like "add contact, message, send file...". (IMHO) the toolbar that is available in the regular window theme makes the contact window look a bit obtuse :D.

Edit: i would not be upset if you guys did not change your mind about this :) and if the discussion were to be closed on the topic, i wouldn't fight it, just thought of this so i said something :D
