I have a MacBook Pro, running MacOS X 10.4.8 and using Growl 0.7.4. For some strange reason it keeps forgetting the theme I wish to use. For example I set it to use 'Smoke', but then I find it using Candybars.
The way I set my value:
- open up Growl Preference Pane
- navigate to Display options
- select 'Smoke'
- quit system preferences
I find the fastest way to test the new settings is by relaunching HardwareGrowler.
I should note that if I change the settings of a particular theme then they are remembered, but not which theme I selected.
Any ideas?

Display Options lets you set options for displays; the selection there is which display style you're configuring, not which display style is used.
You want to change the Display Style option in the General tab, if you want to change it for all applications. Alternately, change the Display option for a specific application in the Applications tab, to change it just for that app.

You are most welcome, it helped me out too
